Upgrade to Water Treatment at Sea Lion Pool, Belfast Zoo
Belfast City Council commissioned Doran Consulting to assess proposals for saline dosing to the water in the aquatic tanks in the penguin, sea lion and bear enclosures at Belfast Zoo. A report by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) in August 2016 had indicated that the zoo should (1) provide saline water for the sea lion tanks (2) review backwashing of the water treatment filters and (3) review water quality in the sea lion pool.
An assessment was made of the current water treatment arrangements and proposals were made for the upgrade of water treatment for the sea lion pool. Doran undertook the preparation of the tender documents, assessments of the tender submissions, contract management and site supervision of the installation contract that included:
- Refurbishment of the existing pressure filters and replacement of the filter media with a high performance media;
- New salt water chlorine generation system
- New UV disinfection equipment
- Addition of Variable speed drives for the circulation pumps and new control panel
- Backwash water settlement and recovery system
The appointed Contractor ensured that the existing site functionality was maintained and fully operational at all times during the construction phase.
