Michael  Bassett

Michael joined Doran Consulting in 2022 and is a Chartered member of Engineers Ireland with over 22 years of experience in infrastructure design. Before joining, Michael held the position of Principle Civil Engineer for 14 years, of which 3 years were as an Associate. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Marine Technology in 2000 and BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering in 2008. Michael has led the design for the Regional DVA Vehicle Test centre replacement schemes across Northern Ireland as well as multiple Hotel and residential schemes across UK and Ireland through Design and Build contracts.

He specialises in Design and Build projects, Sustainable Urban Drainage, Industrial developments, Schools, Hotels, Health & Safety and RAMS and is a qualified Road Safety Auditor within UK and Ireland. Michael is currently infrastructure project led on Riverside II Energy from Waste Project, Kintore Substation extension, Old Bushmills Distillery expansion works and Belfast Transport Hub development External works. He is an active member of Engineers Ireland and has been the Chairperson for Engineers Ireland Donegal Region committee since 2019. Within his chairperson’s role, he was nominated to be part of a select team to develop and implement the National BREXIT support scheme across the Engineers Ireland network.

In his spare time, Michael has been a dedicated member of the Irish Coast Guard since 2012 in which he holds the position of Rescue Boat Coxswain, Cliff Rescue Climber / Instructor, H&S Representative and Fire Warden.

Liam Baxter

Liam joined Doran Consulting in 2017 and is a Chartered member of Engineers Ireland in addition to being a Chartered member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. He has over 15 years of experience in the construction industry working as a Civil and Structural Engineer before joining Doran Consulting in his current role as a Principal Designer and PSDP on a diverse range of projects.

Liam’s Principal Designer experience includes major infrastructure projects for clients such as Belfast City Airport and Belfast Harbour Commission. He has also acted as Principal Designer on various healthcare projects such as Altnagelvin North Wing and Restaurant in addition to a large number of Water and Wastewater projects. Liam has also performed the role of PSDP on Civil Engineering projects such as Blackwater Bridge and Castlerea and Environs Water Supply Scheme.

Liam is currently acting as Principal Designer on the Severn Trent Water AMP7 Framework and Altnagelvin Paediatric Unit.

Stephen Burrows

Stephen Burrows joined Doran Consulting in 2015 with over 17 years’ experience as a structural engineer and as a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (2007). He has a wide variety of project experience, ranging from local landmark educational establishments to international award winning structures such as the world class auditorium within the King Abdulaziz Centre for Knowledge and Culture in Saudi Arabia. Stephen has extensive experience in providing structural engineering solutions within Retail, Education and Energy sectors and is currently acting as the project lead for the delivery of the Teesside Renewable Energy Plant, in the North East of England.

Stephen Clarke

Stephen Clarke is an Incorporated Civil Engineer with extensive experience working as part of our Public Health team since 2013. Stephen has over 8 years’ experience in successfully delivering a wide range of projects, predominantly in water supply, wastewater infrastructure, wastewater treatment and civil infrastructure.

Stephen has been responsible for project optioneering appraisal studies, outline design, detailed design, and project management of a range of public health schemes including the design and project management of the Queen’s Bridge, Belfast Siphons Upgrade. The upgrade works involved the rehabilitation of critical sewerage infrastructure within the City Centre which serves 40,000 PE. Recent projects include Clabby WwTW where he provided civil design support to the Contractor on a design & build contract for the construction of a new aerated reed bed WwTW and is currently delivering a variety of high-quality multidisciplinary schemes for a major national utility company on their Professional Services Framework.

James Cochrane

James Cochrane joined Doran Consulting in 2007 and has worked on a wide range of Structural Engineering projects over a variety of sectors. He started in the education sector working on University projects providing both research and lecture facilities before progressing to work in the health sector where he has worked on health and wellbeing centres and hospital facilities including the recently opened Omagh hospital. His range of experience also extends to both residential and office developments and includes the City Quays development at Belfast Harbour, having worked on both City Quays 1 and City Quays 2. He is currently a team leader in the power transmission sector of the company having completed the Structural Design of the award winning East West Interconnector which links the British and Irish electrical grids and presently the Caithness- Moray HVDC Link.

Ciaran Donaghy

Ciaran Donaghy is a graduate of Ulster University, achieving first-class honours in BEng Civil Engineering and earning a Distinction in MSc Infrastructure Engineering. Since joining Doran Consulting in 2017, Ciaran has served as a team leader within the Civil Engineering and Infrastructure Team. A Character Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers, he has excelled as a design lead and Project Manager in various civil engineering projects, notably contributing to the success of the Enniskillen Public Realm Scheme.

Ciaran's expertise spans a wide range of areas, including infrastructure, environmental improvement schemes, public realm works, schools, waste management facilities, road design, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), and leisure and sports projects, encompassing mountain bike and walking trails.

With a profound understanding of project management and contract administration, Ciaran specialises in using NEC3/4 Contracts. In 2021, he achieved accreditation as an NEC4 Project Manager and holds accreditation as an NEC Site Supervisor, showcasing his commitment to excellence and proficiency in the field.

Sean Douglas

Educated at St. Malachy’s College and Queen’s University Belfast, Sean joined Doran Consulting after graduating in 1988. Sean became a Chartered Structural Engineer in 1996 and was appointed Associate in 2002.

Sean has a particular interest in both the design of new buildings and refurbishment of existing structures. He has worked on many prestigious projects in the public, private, commercial and industrial sectors. Sean has particular expertise in the provision of structural engineering solutions in the fields of education and healthcare.

Rory McSwiggan

Rory is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers working as part of our Public Health team since 2021. Rory has a wide range of experience before and after joining Doran Consulting. His previous experience included being lead designer for multiple turnkey projects for clients across the globe within the wastewater, sand and aggregate, recycling, and soil remediation industries. His key responsibilities included process design, mechanical design, lead commissioning and optimisation engineer, tendering, MEICA equipment specifying and procurement.

Since joining Doran Consulting Rory has gained experience in successfully delivering wastewater treatment projects for clients in the UK and Ireland. Rory has been responsible for wastewater treatment process design, mechanical design, project optioneering and feasibility studies, chemical analysis, outline design, hydraulic design and contract management. A recent project where Rory has delivered process and mechanical designs is Nenagh WwTP which serves 22,000 PE and he is currently working on many other wastewater treatment projects.  Rory has also attended and facilitated HAZOPs for various clients on multiple occasions

Eamon  Foley

Eamon Foley is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over a decade of experience. Eamon earned his Master's degree in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University of Belfast in 2011. Joining Doran Consulting in 2013, where he has consistently demonstrated excellence and practiced ongoing professional development, culminating in his achievement of Chartered Engineer status in 2023.

With a focus on sustainable development, Eamon has developed a keen interest in the design and implementation of large-scale earthworks schemes, road design, and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). As a team leader in Doran Consulting's infrastructure team, he has gained valuable experience across diverse civil engineering projects, including airports, highways, hospitals, schools, power transmission, and waste management facilities, particularly in Energy from Waste infrastructure.

Eamon has played a key role in civil engineering design for various projects, such as the Victoria Square Development in Woking, Gresham Road School, Marjory Kinnon SEN School, Parliament Hill School, Rookery South EFW, Newhurst EFW, Westfield EFW, Lostock EFW, and the Moray East Substation Development. His involvement in these ventures underscores his expertise in managing and executing complex civil engineering works.

 

Kirk Frame

Kirk Frame graduated from Queen’s University Belfast with a First-Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering. Kirk joined Doran Consulting in 2019 and has over 10 years’ experience as a structural engineer in a variety of sectors.

Kirk has led the design of various landmark medium to high-rise commercial buildings in South Africa and the seismic zones of Accra, Ghana. He has also designed and managed the construction of several industrial warehouses, mining, and process structures. Kirk has wide-ranging experience in providing structural engineering solutions while working closely with clients, other designers, and contractors, to ensure that projects are delivered to the highest possible standard. Kirk is currently the lead designer on the Lostock Energy from Waste Project in England. 

Josh Harrison

Josh Harrison graduated from the University of Northampton with a First-Class Honors degree in Civil Engineering. Josh joined Doran Consulting in 2021 and has over 10 years’ experience as a civil engineer in the residential, commercial, healthcare and energy sectors.

 

Throughout his career, Josh has developed expertise in the design, modelling and delivery of earthworks schemes, road design, design of drainage systems and large-scale enablement works projects.

 

Josh currently works within the Civil Infrastructure team and has extensive experience in providing complex civil engineering solutions while working closely with scheme stakeholders to ensure that, projects are delivered to the highest possible standard.

 

Josh is currently the lead civil engineer on the Belfast Transport Hub and Rivenhall site development works projects.

Rickard Hulten

Rickard Hulten joined Doran Consulting in 2014 and is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Rickard has extensive experience in the marine and harbour sector with a strong technical focus. He has been responsible for leading design teams in the delivery of the technical design of marine structures for several major projects, including several design and build projects. His range of experience also extends to bridge and highway structure engineering.

Rickard took part in the 2016 ICE Emerging Engineers Award and was awarded the Brennan Cup for winning the Northern Ireland regional final of the competition for writing and presenting a paper on his involvement in the Green Port Hull project.

Geoff Johnston

Geoff Johnston is a Chartered Scientist and Chartered Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the areas of water quality, water supply engineering and wastewater engineering including water treatment plant treatability studies, wastewater treatment plant process design, civil design and feasibility, environmental monitoring and chemical analysis.  

Geoff joined Doran Consulting in 2000 and was appointed to the post of Associate in 2006. Since joining the company, he has worked as part of the Public Health team. Prior to joining the company, Geoff worked for 8 years in the IRTU Water Quality Branch carrying out specialist water sampling, flow measurement and laboratory chemical analysis.  

Key projects in which Geoff has been involved include carrying out treatability studies for Caugh Hill (38MLD) and Glenhordial (8.5MLD) water treatment plants, and feasibility studies for wastewater sludge and backwash management. Geoff has also been involved in the process design for more than 15 wastewater treatment plants, each designed with the capability to provide water treatment services for up to 25,000PE, and civil design for more than 20 capital wastewater treatment plant and sewerage schemes.

Geoff has also provided project management and site supervision services on a range of projects, notably acting as lead site supervisor on a 3 year multi-site project for new wastewater treatment and sewerage facilities.

In addition to providing a range of civil engineering services to clients, Geoff is a member of the Northern Ireland CIWEM committee.

Ray  Kinnaird

Ray Kinnaird graduated from Queen’s University of Belfast in 2011 and joined Doran Consulting in 2014. He became a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2018.

 

Ray works in the Structural team and has gained extensive experience in a wide range of projects within the Commercial, Education, Healthcare, and Infrastructure sectors. Working closely with clients, contractors, and other members of the design teams he has had a leading role in the delivery of several prestigious projects including Belfast Grand Central Station, the award-winning City Quays 3 office block at Belfast Harbour and the North Block development at Altnagelvin Hospital.

 

Ray has a particular interest in structural analysis software and the design of Reinforced Concrete structures. He is also proficient in managing the use of BIM on projects for modelling and clash detection and is a strong advocate for working in a collaborative 3D environment with other designers and contractors.

Philip McManus

Philip McManus graduated from the University of Ulster with an MSc in Infrastructure Engineering in 2012. Whilst at university Philip was the recipient of the William Bald Scholarship. Following a year working in Scotland in the hydropower sector, Philip joined Doran Consulting in 2014 and became a Chartered Civil Engineer in 2020.

Philip currently works as a team leader within the Marine and Infrastructure Team and has been the design lead in a wide range of civil engineering projects including the recent redevelopment of the Belfast Harbour Victoria Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Philip has extensive experience in project management and contract administration, primarily using NEC and ICC Conditions of Contract and became an accredited NEC4 Project Manager in 2020. Throughout his career, Philip has developed a keen interest in sustainable development. He is experienced in flood risk modelling and the production of flood risk assessments. Philip has completed assessments for numerous large commercial and industrial developments throughout Northern Ireland for clients such as Lidl, Belfast Harbour Commissioners and DAERA.

Sean McShane

Sean McShane joined Doran Consulting in 2002 and currently works as a team leader within our Structural department. He became a Chartered Member of The Institution of Civil Engineers in 2013 and a Chartered Member of The Institution of Structural Engineers in 2015. Sean has gained comprehensive structural experience in a wide range of projects including schools, retail and commercial developments, sports facilities, on-shore marine works, building refurbishment and condition inspections of existing structures. He is currently the project lead on the City Quays Hotel and Multi Storey Car Park schemes in Belfast.

Jack  Shiels

Jack Shiels graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2016 and joined Doran Consulting in 2019, working within the Water Team. In 2023 Jack became a Chartered Member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Jack has worked on a range of water and wastewater treatment projects from optioneering stage to final design for a variety of water companies including NI Water, Irish Water and Severn Trent Water.

He has provided process designs, hydraulic designs and M&E layout designs for wastewater projects of up to 100,000PE including Ards North WwTW, Ballymakeera WwTW, Ballykelly WwTW and Tullow WwTW. In addition, Jack has gained experience as HAZOP facilitator in the wastewater sector.  Work in the clean water sector includes the process design for Lettermacaward WTW and Killybegs WTW.

 

Jonathan Skelton

Jonathan was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and graduated from Queen's University Belfast in 1986. He joined Doran Consulting in 1990 and was appointed Associate in 2002.

Jonathan is responsible for many of the company's traffic and transportation projects including Traffic/ Transport Assessments for development proposals, traffic surveys, traffic management schemes, traffic calming surveys, highway improvement schemes and highway infrastructure design.

He has extensive experience of addressing road and traffic issues during the planning process for a wide variety of development types.

Alistair  Toner

Alistair Toner graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1996 and joined Doran Consulting in 2003. Alistair is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Highways and Transportation and has been a Chartered Engineer since 2013. Alistair works in the Traffic Team and has extensive experience of all things traffic related. This can vary from master planning at the early stages of concept design right through to the detailed design of highways. Alistair regularly provides traffic advice for planning applications with input into site layouts and preparation of Transport Assessments and Travel Plans. Alistair designed and took through the construction of highway layouts for Ebrington, Game of Thrones Visitor Centre and the Wokingham mixed-use and public realm development. Alistair is currently working on the offsite public highway improvement works at the Belfast Transport Hub.
