Moyola Water Treatment Works, Magherafelt
Moyola WTW treats water abstracted from Lough Neagh to supply Magherafelt and the surrounding area.
Doran Consulting was commissioned by NI Water to increase the output at Moyola to augment the supply so that water rationing in the area could be avoided. The project had the timeframe of a year to achieve its aim which necessitated a particularly fast track programme of work.
The new works now supply 20.5 Ml/d of potable water. The existing sedimentation process was retained in parallel with a new Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system and two additional first stage rapid gravity filters were constructed.
In addition to the extension, in order to comply with the manganese requirements of the EC Directive on drinking water, new second stage rapid gravity filters were constructed with a maximum flow rate of 12m/hr to facilitate manganese removal.
Construction and commissioning were complicated by the need for the existing works to remain in full operation use throughout the construction period.
