Doran Consulting undertook the structural design services for this fast track Design & Build contract for a substantial extension and refurbishment of the existing Tesco store at the Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre.
The structural engineering brief for the new extension involved the construction of an additional 1,500m² of shop floor area, a new glazed entrance canopy to the shopping centre, a substantial extension to the service yard, site work retaining walls and support platforms/ access gangways for new roof level AHU plant throughout the centre.
The new shop floor extension consisted of a series of 23m, single span, portal frames connected to the existing buildings steel frame. This required us to undertake a back analysis of the original structure, as well as designing the new frame. The new steelwork was supported off conventional pad foundations and ground bearing concrete floor slabs were used throughout the extension.
The shopping centre and Tescos existing store had to remain operational throughout the contract, which required close liaison and co-ordination between the design team, contractor and client. The project was completed within the contract period.
