Harbour Development, Safety Upgrades and Refurbishment

Doran Consulting has extensive experience of providing engineering advice on a range of marine and sea defence projects. We have advised Belfast Harbour Commissioners for over forty years in relation to many milestone harbour developments, safety upgrades and refurbishment projects, helping it to remain a modern port which is a centre of local distribution and commerce.

Initial advice provided to the Belfast Harbour Commissioners included advising on issues associated with modifying existing quays to facilitate the deepening of docks and examining the stability of existing walls under loadings generated by the introduction of modern cargo handling methods. In more recent times, we have provided a range of design advice in relation to modern development projects, including the innovative construction of the UK’s first bespoke offshore wind farm pre-assembly and installation harbour at D1, the construction of a new Stena Line Terminal at Victoria Terminal 4, the provision a new oil terminal at Oil Berth 1 and the construction of a new section of deep water mixed-use cargo berth at Stormont Wharf to name but a few of the projects. We have also provided design advice in the relation to the restoration and refurbishment of several key historical features of the Belfast Harbour Estate, for more information please see our “Marine Heritage” section.

In addition to advising on Belfast Harbour, Doran Consulting has been retained for over thirty years by the Northern Ireland Fishery Harbour Authority as advisors on a range of issues relating to the ongoing development of Northern Ireland's three major fishing harbours at Ardglass, Kilkeel and Portavogie.  We have advised the Authority in relation to various projects including key wall remedial works, pier extensions, sea defences, the addition of berthing including floating berths, remedial works to damaged revetments and refurbishment of slipways; with many of these projects requiring related feasibility and model studies, planning, design and site supervision.

We have also been commissioned to provide a range of services in relation to harbours across the Republic of Ireland and the UK including projects in Portnoo in Donegal, Port Forth in Scotland and Canary Wharf in London.
