Clarendon Dock & Dry Dock, Belfast Harbour
Doran Consulting has provided a range of services in relation to the development of Clarendon Dock with Belfast Harbour Commissioners, on behalf of Laganside Corporation. Our initial involvement related to providing design advice in relation to new quay walls and the design and installation of double gates and lock structure at the entrance to the dock. The water level within Clarendon Dock is maintained at a constant level and these refurbishment works were intended to allow the dock to be used as an amenity and pleasure craft marina. The dock now forms the centrepiece of the commercial development of the area which is now one of Belfast’s most prestigious business parks.
We have also undertaken the refurbishment of the two historic Victorian dry docks adjoining the main dock. Works included major masonry repairs, new lock gates and pavement works. These works involved the dismantling of historic masonry walls and their reconstruction using the original materials. The dry dock structures themselves were also repaired in a manner sympathetic to their surroundings. Heavy duty pavements were constructed around the dock structures finished off with high quality Caithess Flagstones. The works also incorporated a public art sculpture of a set of compasses which has now become an iconic symbol of this location.
