Ballyalton Area Replacement Watermains

Doran Consulting provided full design services, contract administration and site supervision to an ongoing programme of watermain rehabilitation in the Newtownards Area of County Down for NI Water.

The scheme in the Ballyalton area involved the replacement of 9km of asbestos cement watermains with MDPE pipe. To minimize the disruption to traffic on the narrow country roads and to reduce the quantity of reinstatement required, it was proposed that a directional drilling method be used to install the new pipe. Bentonite slurry was produced on site to protect pipe walls from damage in this potentially rocky area.
