Ardglass Harbour Physical Modelling
Doran Consulting was commissioned by Northern Ireland Fishery Harbour Authority to develop a physical model of the Ardglass Harbour area, in Co. Down, to investigate the effects of engineering proposals on the wave climate within the harbour. A 1 in 100 natural scale model was constructed by the Department of Civil Engineering, Queen's University Belfast. This enabled options for increasing the existing berthing and the means of providing proper protection for the fishing fleet to be studied.
The recommendations of the above model study were further modelled at the detailed design stage. In this case, a 1 in 60 scale physical model of the 60m pier extension was tested to destruction in the main flume of the hydraulics laboratory at Queen's University Belfast. Following the model study, Doran Consulting carried out the detailed design, tender documents and contract administration for the 60m pier extension which was successfully completed on time and within budget.
