Jordanstown School, Newtownabbey
Jordanstown School provides educational services for children of all ages who are deaf or visually impaired. Doran Consulting was commissioned to provide civil and structural engineering design for brand new, purpose-built steel framed school buildings consisting of primary & secondary classrooms, a residential dormitory block, hydro-therapy pool and a multi sensory room. The buildings were arranged as a village of pavilions to break down the mass of the accommodation and assist in clearly defining each department of the school.
The new school buildings were constructed in two phases to allow the existing school to operate throughout the construction of the new facilities. The new school has a number of unique features including a cantilevered library overhanging the central yard, a triple height foyer with a footbridge to join the walkways on either side of the building and high specification roof glazing.
As part of the civil engineering works required for the new site, Doran Consulting designed all the associated drainage around the building, the car parks and support drainage, a five-a-side football pitch, tennis courts, a running track and play areas, landscaping and all access routes.
