The Plod
13 June 2014
Staff members of Doran Consulting
entered two teams in this amazing 50km Mourne Hike challenge in aid of Action
Medical Research for Children on Friday 13 June 2014.
Training began at the foot of the Mournes in March and the teams met there almost every weekend spending 5 to 8 hours hiking – now that’s commitment! They plodded through snow, fog, gale-force winds, rain and sun for hours on end. After 4 months training they were ready but their biggest worry of all was fatigue - for this 50km hike didn’t start in the morning it started at MIDNIGHT. Their main focus was to stay injury free and complete the course as quickly as possible.
At the stroke of midnight in darkest Tollymore Forest Park 22 teams hit the trail with head torches blazing and maps in hand to negotiate their way through the night. The teams raced through the mountain range in the darkness of night, through sun rise and beyond with no sleep. They pushed on through the next day and at around 15.30 crossed the finish line to complete an adventure they will never forget.
Not only did they all manage to complete the hike injury free but they also got there in 3rd place – beaten only by an army squad of fell runners and an outdoor pursuit company. Job well done!
