Project Summary

The Carlingford Lough Greenway is a 20-kilometre cross-border active-travel route linking Newry in Northern Ireland with Carlingford in County Louth. Developed through a partnership between Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Louth County Council and the East Border Region, the project provides an off-road walking and cycling corridor that enhances regional connectivity and promotes sustainable travel. The scheme makes strategic use of existing assets, including the disused Newry–Carlingford railway line and the Newry Ship Canal towpath, to create a continuous and accessible route. A key feature is the one-kilometre elevated boardwalk constructed within a constrained waterfront corridor to improve continuity, safety and user experience.

Expertise & Delivery

The project was delivered from preliminary design to handover, with Doran Consulting leading the multidisciplinary team and administering both Public Works and NEC contracts. The works included bitmac, asphalt, quarry-dust and concrete surfacing; approximately 10,000 cubic metres of cut and fill; retaining structures, embankments, road crossings and footbridges; and drainage, ducting, lighting, wayfinding, landscaping and fencing. Environmental assessment and engagement with planners, Waterways Ireland, utilities, residents and community groups addressed approvals, access and sensitive shoreline interfaces. Alignment, earthworks, structures, road crossings, utility interfaces and construction access were coordinated within the environmentally constrained shoreline setting. The route promotes active travel, supports tourism and strengthens cross-border connectivity while encouraging a shift from car-based travel.
