Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre

The Client: Queen's University Belfast

Our roles: Structural Design, Civil Design, Principal Designer

Project Summary

The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (AMIC) project, led by Queen’s University Belfast, is located at Global Point Business Park in Newtownabbey.

The new 10,500m² state-of-the-art facility became operational in April 2026 and is positioned to transform the manufacturing innovation ecosystem in Northern Ireland.

Designed for industry, the open-access manufacturing and engineering innovation centre is reinvigorating Northern Ireland’s industrial potential and addressing the future technology and skills challenges faced by the region’s manufacturing sector.

AMIC provides a specialised environment for the advanced manufacturing, materials and engineering sectors to access the latest digital, automation and robotics technologies, supported by experienced engineers and industrial expertise. The centre brings together comprehensive and collaborative regional innovation support for Northern Ireland’s Advanced Manufacturing, Materials and Engineering (AMME) sector, strengthening areas of international competitiveness and establishing a recognised national asset for manufacturing innovation.

Expertise & Delivery

With core capabilities in digitalising manufacturing, smart design, sustainable polymers and composites, and smart nanotechnology, AMIC is driving industrial transformation, supporting the development of future technologies and helping Northern Ireland’s manufacturing sector compete globally with a greater focus on sustainability.

AMIC builds on more than 50 years of sustained innovation and industry support at Queen’s University Belfast through the Northern Ireland Technology Centre (NITC), the Polymers Processing Research Centre (PPRC) and the university-industry partnership NI Advanced Composites and Engineering (NIACE), alongside UK-leading research capabilities in smart design, nanotechnology and photonics.

By 2050, it is estimated that AMIC will have contributed more than £1bn to the local economy, directly and indirectly created over 1,500 permanent jobs and supported the training of 300 apprentices.
