Flagship Cross-Border Waterway Project
26 August 2021
The Ulster Canal Restoration project is a unique, flagship cross-border redevelopment project with Phase 2 set to re-open c. 1km of the existing canal and provide an outdoor tourist attraction area and water sports venue in the border region.
Doran Consulting has been appointed by Waterways Ireland as the Lead
Consultant of an Integrated Design Team, responsible for the design, obtaining
Statutory approvals, procurement of the construction contract, and construction
stage services for the Ulster Canal Restoration Phase 2, Clones to Clonfad,
project. With completion expected in 2023, the €12m project is set to
revitalise tourism and communities on both sides of the border.
Phase two focuses on the restoration of the historic canal between Clones and Clonfad in County Monaghan. The Phase 2 restoration project is funded by the Department of the Taoiseach (Shared Island Unit), Department of Rural and Community Development (Rural Regeneration and Development Fund) and Department of Housing Local Government and Heritage.
The project will include the restoration of c.1km of the existing canal and an existing masonry arch bridge, in addition to welcoming a new 40 berth marina, greenway, towpaths, walking trails, recreation areas and a new access bridge. The amenity area will be located in the vicinity of the existing Clones Canal Stores and will include additional parking, picnic area and service block. It has been over 90 years since a boat last sailed on the waterway and the construction of a new canal basin, will provide opportunities for water sports and leisure on the stretch of water once again.
