The Greencastle Breakwater Project is €18 million investment aimed to extend and upgrade the existing breakwater at Greencastle Harbour, a significant fishing port on the Inishowen Peninsula, Co. Donegal. The breakwater extension and upgrade were designed to improve safety and navigation by mitigating disruptive wave motion and ensuring safer harbour entry. The design accounted for wave climate, climate change impacts, and potential settlement over a 60-year lifespan, using naturally occurring rock armour and core materials.
Despite the challenges of working in a live marine environment and sourcing materials, the project was completed on time and within the €14.4 million budget. Doran Consulting led the civil and structural engineering, project management, and design. The project was delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with Donegal County Council’s vision for sustainable coastal infrastructure.
