Doran Consulting was appointed as lead consultant and to provide civil and structural engineering design advice for the redevelopment of Queen’s University’s playing fields at Upper Malone with the aim of creating world-class indoor and outdoor sports facilities.
The project was phased over 4 years and included the provision of a range of indoor facilities, including the construction of a new clubhouse and reception areas, changing facilities, a bar and social area, viewing facilities, a seminar room, a free weights area of 75m² with changing facilities, reception and storage of 465m², grounds staff accommodation including a staff room, changing and storage facilities of 137 m², providing in total indoor space well in excess of 2,000m².
The development works also included provision of state-of-the-art outdoor facilities including the construction of a 300-seater stand, a new floodlit natural turf “Arena” pitch for football, rugby and gaelic games, a new floodlit sand filled synthetic hockey pitch, a new floodlit 3G synthetic training area and the refurbishment (or where necessary, reconstruction) of 8 natural turf pitches. The site is also surrounded by a 3km recreational trim trail.
Additional facilities provided on the site include a new entrance road and carparking facilities that can accommodate over 300 vehicles, new infrastructure and sewer systems.
