Ulster Canal Phase 2

The Client: Waterways Ireland

Our roles: Lead Consultant, Civil & Structural Engineering, Project Management, Employer's Representative, Site Supervision

Project Summary

The restoration of approximately 1km of the Ulster Canal between Clones and Clonfad in County Monaghan forms part of a wider programme to restore the 14.5km waterway connecting Lough Erne in County Fermanagh to Clones.

The project included the construction of a new 40-berth marina with associated amenities, two new access bridges (New Teehill and New Clonfad), repairs to the existing Restored Teehill masonry arch bridge, and an inverted syphon for the River Lackey with an aqueduct for the new canal at Clonfad.

The scheme also delivered an accessible pedestrian and cycle path along the restored waterway.

Expertise & Delivery

Doran Consulting was appointed by Waterways Ireland as Lead Consultant within the Integrated Design Team, providing civil and structural engineering expertise alongside project management and construction supervision services.

Our involvement included site surveys and investigations, detailed design, statutory approvals, preparation of tender documentation and management of the construction process through to handover.

Acting as Employer’s Representative under the PWC-CF4 contract, we coordinated the delivery of the canal restoration works.

As this section of the canal is not yet connected to Lough Erne, the project also incorporated a new borewell to provide a sustainable water supply to fill the canal and a rising main to provide water circulation.
