Greencastle Breakwater
The Client: Donegal County Council
Our roles: Marine Engineer, Structural Engineer, Design Review, Procurement, Risk Management, Site Delivery
Project Summary
The Greencastle Harbour project rehabilitated and completed the deep-water breakwater, extending the previously halted structure by approximately 200 metres and upgrading the earlier section to improve shelter and navigation for fishing vessels, visiting craft and the Greencastle–Magilligan ferry.
Expertise & Delivery
The project was delivered through review and development of the legacy design, with current codes, updated wave-climate assessment and bathymetric information used to confirm geometry and armour grading while protecting tidal flow at the mouth of Lough Foyle. The trunk and head use two layers of 1–3-tonne armour over a 60–300-kilogram underlayer and substantial core. A Civil 3D model coordinated the profile and tie-in and calculated approximately 7,500 cubic metres of primary armour, 14,000 cubic metres of underlayer and 83,000 cubic metres of core material. Delivery was coordinated within a six-month programme around marine access, environmental constraints and live harbour operations.
