Project Summary

The Portrush North Pier resilience scheme strengthened approximately 140 metres of seaward-facing pier using reused and new armour stone, a mass-concrete toe beam, masonry repointing, concrete repairs and upgraded vehicle access. The works improve resilience at a working and leisure harbour exposed to severe Atlantic conditions.

Expertise & Delivery

The project was delivered through investigation, option appraisal, detailed design, procurement and construction, with ground-penetrating radar, geotechnical investigation, structural and dive surveys and wave-climate assessment used to establish deterioration. Mathematical modelling identified design wave heights of 5.3 metres along the toe beam and 5.75 metres at the pier head for a one-in-100-year storm. The works were procured under NEC3, with post-completion underwater inspections included. Construction planning addressed constrained town-centre access and harbour operations, while engagement supported armour-stone delivery by barge, maintained pier access and the temporary relocation of lobster pots.
