Southern Regional College Armagh

Our roles: Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer
Project Summary
The redevelopment of Southern Regional College’s Armagh campus replaced ageing accommodation at Lonsdale Road with a larger teaching and support facility. Site works included demolition of the existing buildings, diversion of a major culvert and construction of an eight-metre contiguous piled retaining wall between the new building and car park.
Expertise & Delivery
The project was delivered under a design-and-build contract, with Doran Consulting providing civil and structural engineering services. Geotechnical and settlement analysis addressed ground varying from stiff clay to soft material along a historic watercourse, leading to a combined spread- and piled-foundation strategy with acceptable differential movement. The braced steel frame and composite metal-deck floors were designed for construction efficiency while accommodating strict floor-beam depth limits imposed by integrated services. Buildability, sequencing, retaining-wall interfaces and neighbouring constraints were managed to avoid disruption to the Grade A-listed courthouse, a primary school and nearby homes.
